Claims range from "reduces oxidative stress" to "improves athletic performance" to "reduces inflammation." The marketing tends to outpace the science.

This article looks at what the evidence actually shows, whether any of it is specifically relevant for people on GLP-1 treatment, and what an honest assessment of its potential role looks like.

What Is Hydrogen Water?

Standard drinking water (H2O) contains hydrogen atoms bonded to oxygen. Hydrogen water refers to water in which additional molecular hydrogen gas (H2) has been dissolved — typically to concentrations of 0.5-1.6mg/L (parts per million), above the approximately 0.0001mg/L found in ordinary water.

The proposed mechanism is that dissolved H2 acts as a selective antioxidant. Unlike broad antioxidants (such as high-dose Vitamin C), molecular hydrogen is hypothesised to selectively scavenge hydroxyl radicals — one of the most damaging reactive oxygen species (ROS) — without disrupting beneficial oxidative signalling pathways.
