Semaglutide
Wegovy is semaglutide dosed specifically for weight loss, and it is the version most UK clinics reach for first. In the STEP trials people lost around 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks. It is a weekly injection, and the trade off for that result is a slow dose titration to keep nausea manageable.
Tirzepatide
Mounjaro is the most effective option licensed in the UK so far, with around 22% average weight loss in the SURMOUNT trial. It works on two gut hormones rather than one. Most women tolerate it well, but the appetite suppression is strong, so getting enough protein takes real attention.
Semaglutide
Ozempic is the same drug as Wegovy but licensed for type 2 diabetes, so for weight loss it is prescribed off-label at lower doses. It is often the cheapest way to access semaglutide privately. Expect slightly less weight loss than Wegovy because the licensed dose is lower.
Semaglutide (oral)
Rybelsus is semaglutide in a daily tablet, which suits people who would rather avoid needles. Oral absorption is lower, so the weight loss is more modest at around 8%. It has to be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, then nothing else for 30 minutes.
Liraglutide
Victoza is an older daily liraglutide injection, used mainly for type 2 diabetes. It is less effective for weight loss than the weekly options and means injecting every day. Worth knowing about, but rarely the first choice now that semaglutide and tirzepatide exist.
Liraglutide
Saxenda is liraglutide licensed for weight loss, taken as a daily injection. Average weight loss is around 8%, lower than the weekly drugs, and the daily schedule puts some people off. It remains an option on the NHS weight management pathway.
